Staying Alive in Cold Weather

As temperatures begin to dip, the risks faced by our unhoused neighbors increase sharply. Cold weather is not just uncomfortable. It is dangerous. Even a small drop in body temperature can put a person into medical crisis. Hypothermia begins when the body falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this can happen even in temperatures above 40 degrees if a person is wet, exposed to wind, or lacks proper clothing and shelter. Once hypothermia begins, the heart, nervous system, and organs start to shut down.

For people living outdoors, the danger is constant. Warm coats, thermal socks, waterproof blankets, tents, and insulated sleeping bags are not luxuries. They are survival tools. A blanket that retains heat can slow the drop in body temperature. A dry pair of socks can prevent frostbite. A simple mylar emergency blanket can reflect up to 90 percent of body heat back toward the body. These items help keep people alive through cold nights that many take for granted.

Today is Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to generosity. It is a day when people around the world come together to support organizations that strengthen their communities. On this day, your donation to SHARE Community can place life saving supplies directly into the hands of people who need them most. Every contribution helps us provide weather appropriate clothing, blankets, tarps, tents, hygiene essentials, showers, and compassionate support.

If you would like to give today, you can make a donation here or by contacting us directly via email (info@thesharecommunity.com). Your gift has an immediate impact and helps protect the lives of our unhoused neighbors during the coldest months of the year.

Together we can share hope, abundance, resources, and encouragement with those who need it most.
